Test Generator Best Practices
A Guide to TG's Proctoring Feature

Introduction

This best practice describes features and behaviors that define and influence the performance of Test Generator's proctoring options.  It does not cover every possible combination of settings that test authors might try--we encourage your suggestions and any feedback that might assist other customers.

Dual Login

TG includes a Dual Login feature located under the Test Properties > Security tab.

T.authors enable this feature if they want to prevent a t.taker from taking a test without first requiring a proctor log in.  At a class level, the t.admin enrolls a proctor by adding them under the Instructors tab.

In the example below, any instructor enrolled under the Instructors tab, could serve as a proctor for any test that is Dual Login-enabled under that course.

The proctor login appears after the t.taker has logged in to the Tester and selected a Dual Login-enabled test.  Once the t.taker selects the test, a proctor login screen appears requesting the proctor's credentials.

Using the t.taker's keyboard, the proctor types in their proctor credentials, clicks the OK button and then returns control of the keyboard to the t.taker to begin their test.  If the test has been set up to enable one or more retakes, each retake login would require a proctor login.

Note: if the t.taker experiences an interruption in the test due to lost network connection, computer crash, power failure or time-out, they would not be able to resume their test without the proctor login.

Proctoring Scenarios

The Dual Login property...

1_ Is not enabled, but there is a proctor in the room to observe and assist as needed.
2_ Is enabled, requiring a proctor login before the t.taker can begin their test.
3_ Is enabled.  The t.author has provided the t.takers with a test-specific proctor login, eliminating the need for the proctor's assistance logging in.

Best Practice.  Scenario 3 is ideal in a classroom setting where everyone is sitting for a test at the same time and having to log in each t.taker would be impractical.

We also recommend setting the test's Retakes option to No Retakes.  Learn more.

Proctors

Proctor profiles are created by t.admins and assigned to one or more individuals classified as instructors (aka teachers, trainers).  In TG the designation is usually Instructor or Trainer; however, the t.admin can change this designation under the System > Settings: Designations tab.

designations-tab

The proctor title can be assigned to individuals who use TG to create, administer and proctor tests, or non-TG users who only proctor tests.  It can also apply to non-TG users, who need access to TG Reports, or TG's Admin Dashboard to review summary test results for any group of t.takers that they manage.

Best Practice: T.admins can give proctor credentials to any responsible party, "responsible" meaning anyone that they deem to be a trustworthy member of the management / training team.

Proctor Credentials

Tier1 and Tier2 TG Admins can create and assign a proctor's credentials.

T.admins can also disable or change a proctor's credentials, e.g. scenario 3.  This can be done after every group test event to prevent the sharing of proctor credentials with other t.takers.

Best Practice: To avoid the possibility of proctor credentials becoming compromised, we recommend assigning one t.admin the responsibility of managing proctor profiles and credentials.

Also, after a group of t.takers has completed a test, we recommend taking the test "offline" by un-checking the test's Permit Testing checkbox until it is needed again.

Admin Dashboard

TG Web's Admin Dashboard option enables admins, instructors / proctors to access summary test data for classes, tests and test takers.

For example, management-level users responsible for a department or employee group could use their credentials to log in, view, print or export summary test data from the Admin Dashboard.

If the TG Web account is hosted over the web, these users would be able to access this test data from any internet-enabled location.

Also, if enabled by the test author, these users could also receive summary or detailed test information through email.  The email template can be customized to include the name of the proctor.
