Your Testing Requirements
A Getting-Started Guide for Beginners

Don't be confused by the labels: test generator, test maker, quiz maker, exam builder, exam creation software -- call them what you will -- you want something that will help you to create, deliver and administer tests to your testing audience.

Scenario: You're just getting started.  You aren't currently testing and you need help, not a sales pitch.

  • Have you ever worked with or managed a computer-based testing system?
  • Are you looking for an exam builder that will allow you to create, print and give paper and pencil tests?
  • Or... or do you want to be able to create and publish your tests over the web?
  • Do you have test content prepared and saved in, for example, an Excel or Word file?
  • Do you need some free consultation time to figure out what you need?
  • Would you like to schedule a call

Pricing and Licensing

When it comes to test generators and pricing, there's "free", expensive and everything in between.

Pricing options vary from vendor to vendor.  Some only offer hosted subscriptions while others offer hosting by you or the vendor.

Here are some of the factors that influence the cost of our Test Generator products.

  • Delivery: Over your LAN, Intranet or Internet?
  • User Licenses: Estimate the number of users who need to be logged in at any given point in time--we refer to this as concurrency. Concurrency is defined as: any combination of administrative-level users and/or test takers who are logged in to your testing system, at the same time.
  • Packages: We offer 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 100 (and up) user-license packages. How many user licenses do you estimate you need?
  • SupportEach purchase includes email and phone support, two online training credit hours and updates to the latest version of Test Generator.

Before you buy

We always recommend scheduling an online demo.  A picture's worth a thousand words and it a great way of making sure that what they offer matches your testing requirements.

Ask if the vendor provides online demos and find out if the sessions are recorded--and that includes any discussion regarding pricing.

You want to make sure that everything is clearly spelled out before you deciding on a purchase.

Deployment

If you are considering having the application installed on your own servers, you want to make sure to involve IT in the review process.

Request technical details and provide the vendor with the email and phone number of your technical person.

Support and Training

Make sure to ask about support and training.  A good way to find out about their support is to ask for references.
