SecureTG
A Guide to SecureTG's Setup Parameters

Audience

TG Web customers who...

  • Are considering the purchase of SecureTG (STG) or
  • Have STG but were not involved in the initial STG setup process, but need to get up to speed or
  • Need to make changes to their STG setup but don't know where to begin

For starters we recommend visiting our SecureTG web page to learn more, or contact us to schedule and online support session.

request-3SecureTG and Web Browsers

We often get asked, 'which web browser does SecureTG need in order to work?'--the answer is none.   STG is its own special version of a web browser.  It does not matter which web browser you normally use--SecureTG does not require it.  What is required are the 3 files that make up SecureTG.  These file need to be copied onto any Windows computer, laptop or notepad that will be used by your test-taking audience to take an STG-enabled test.

Implementing STG: The Process

Here's a outline of the implementation process that we typically follow.

Customer

Test Generator

1_ Contacts us to request an online demo of STG

Demo scheduled, recorded and recording link emailed to customer.

2_ Decides to purchase SecureTG

Invoice sent, implementation begins once payment is received

3_ Conference call or online session to select STG parameters--SEE Secure TG Setup Parameters, below.

Based on the customer's preferences, a SecureTG configuration file is created  and a trial set of STG files (3) is uploaded.  Customer is then emailed a download link and instructions.

4_ Downloads the STG trial set for evaluation. Note: only those tests that the customer has STG-enabled are available through the secure browser.

At this stage, we recommend restricting the trial to 1 or 2 computers that are managed by the test administrators.

5_ Approves or requests parameter changes

If needed, parameters changes are made and a new configuration file is emailed to the customer.  Note the customer is instructed to replace the previous configuration file with the new one--the other two files remain the same.

6_ Customer tests revised STG and signs off on the revised configuration.

We provide a final set of STG files and email customer a download link.

7_ Customer downloads the approved set of STG files.  IT or test administrator copies the STG file set onto Windows computers that will be used by test admins and test takers.

Note: Customers who were using Windows 10 verson 1803 had experienced problems with STG.  Microsoft has since release newer versions (1809 and 1903) which have fixed the problem.  Anyone who has the 1803 version of Windows should plan on upgrading to a more recent version.  Learn more.

Note: Customers who host their own TG Web account can provide their own download link and instructions to the STG files.

If we host the TG Web account, we can provide a separate URL that includes download instructions and a download link to the STG files.

Enabling STG Setting Under Test Properties

test-properties_security_enforce-secure-testing-3-detailIn order for test takers to take an STG-enabled test, the test author must enable the Enforce Secure Testing checkbox setting located under a test's Test Properties > Security tab, "Security Parameters", highlighted in the example on the left. If this property is not enabled the test won't be available in STG.

We always recommend previewing the test before publishing it to a testing audience.  Also, the test admin should review our Guide to SecureTG Performance and Windows 10 Updates to make sure all of the testing machines have a Windows versions and build that is compatible with their version of STG.

SecureTG Setup Parameters

As described above, the implementation process involves choosing from a list of STG parameters.  The parameters that are most often recommended are highlighted in the table below.

Parameter Description
Starting URL ex: https://example.mytgweb.com/login
Password to close SecureTG Browser Requires a proctor to enter a password to close the browser
Confirm Password Entered Confirmation of proctor password
Require password to launch SecureTG Checkbox - same password as specified above
Only allow exiting SecureTG from Tester login screen Prevents the test taker from exiting STG during the test
Enable Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) Enables test taker or proctor to exit STG in the event of an interruption.  An interruption defined as a network failure, power outage, computer crash or session time-out.
Enable Task Bar (Start Menu, Ctrl+Esc) Usually not recommended for high-stakes tests
Enable Copy / Paste Usually not recommended for high-stakes tests
Skip Outlook Running Check Opens STG even if Outlook is open
Skip Administrator Mode and Terminal Services check Enables STG to launch bypassing these two Windows properties

STG_setup-screen_-admin-settingsThe customer chooses which parameters they want, and we generate an encrypted SecureTG configuration file based on those settings.

The first parameter, the Starting URL, is the customer's web Tester address, the web page address where test takers go to log in to take a test..  If we host the the account, we provide the URL, if the customer hosts their own TG Web account they give us their web Tester URL.

Next, we upload a zip file containing the three STG files and email the customer a download link and instructions.  The files include:

SecureTG.exe

Executable file.  If used often we recommend creating a shortcut and pinning it to the task bar or Start menu.

SecureTG.ini

The encrypted configuration file that lists all of the parameters selected by the customer.

SecureTGDLL.dll

Dynamic link library file containing code used to execute STG.
